Article Title:
QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIGENOUS AND CONTEMPORARY ADIRE CLOTHS PRODUCED IN ABEOKUTA
Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the potential quality factors obtainable from indigenous and contemporary adire cloths produced in Abeokuta. Three groups (producers, sellers and patrons) of people (260 respondents) were used for data collection. Weight loss, abrasion, staining and sun test of adire samples were determined using the procedure of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria. Data were subjected to Analysis of Variance and Chi-square test. The result revealed that fabric used for indigenous adire was heavier than the contemporary adire while the least initial weight of indigenous adire fabric was 0.16 and the highest being 0.25,while that of the contemporary adire was between 0.13 and 0.14. The loss in the adire fabric strength was highest in the exotic adire (0.117) and lowest in the modern adire (0.127). The staining test showed that under wet condition, fabrics generally had greater colour loss than in the dried form and that the wet and the dry forms showed same level of stability across the samples, (p > 0.05). |
